We are continuing our series discussing a reverse osmosis system as a residential hard water solution. As we mentioned in previous articles, a reverse osmosis system only makes a few gallons of water a day. Although it is not suitable for preventing hard water in a residential setting, it can be used to complement an electronic water descaler. If you own a reverse osmosis drinking water system, you will need to clean, sanitize, and recharge it on a regular basis, once a year at a minimum. You will then need to remove all of the filters and membrane from their housings and pour either hydrogen peroxide, unscented bleach, or designated sanitizer into the pre-filter housing and cycle the system with water.
Each reverse osmosis system is different, so as we mentioned earlier, this is just a brief overview to give you an idea of what the process entails. You will need to consult your owner’s manual for instructions specific to your unit.
